IPOH Makan-makan Weekend part 2

Dinner! We headed for Ipoh’s renown
Tauge (Bean sprout) Chicken – Lou Wong or Onn Kee, Jln Yau Tet Shin
We couldn’t decide which to go for so at a local’s recommendation, went for Onn Kee.

A friend later told us he prefers Lou Wong but someone else also mentioned another name as the ori-original...

We were afraid rice would be too filling, so decided to have kueh teow soup instead with our chicken.

The tauge was awesome – look how they’re short and fat (juicy & crunchy) instead of the usual long and lanky.

The chicken however was a bit of a disappointment.

Apart from the taste that was nothing out of the ordinary, I found the chicken rough and full of fats.

Two kueh teow soup
Ayam
Tauge
1 Drink
= RM15.50

Opposite Onn Kee we discovered a bakery with very cute stuff.
Biskut Lam Fong

Pig

Hen

Tortoise
Snake

This was my reaction to the biscuits hahaaa... No, this is supposedly a monkey.

The figurine biscuits came with a choice of red bean or lotus paste and cost RM2 each. The taste however, was not as good as the looks so we were quite disappointed.

We had to walk around and allow our food to digest before we go for dessert and found another confectionary shop.

Biskut Sin Eng Heong, Jln Mustapha Al-Bakry
We discovered, is popular for its kaya kok (kaya triangles), which sold like hot cakes. (Kaya is a sweet paste made of coconut) Since we were already there, we decided to pick up some other popular Ipoh biscuits.
We also bought some heong peng (literally – “fragrant biscuits” slightly crunchy crusts filled with a gluey sweet paste) and dau sa peng (green bean biscuits) which were really yummy! Be warned though, this confectionary uses lard in its products.

The queue

Confectionary fresh from the ovens

Took a peep into the back and found the biscuits are made in the shop itself.

Some biscuits that looked and smelled too good to resist!
- Coconut and pandan- Ham dan sou (salted egg yolk with lotus paste)

IPOH Makan-makan Weekend Part 1

On a budget constrain after my Europe trip (yes that will be posted sooon hehe), we decided to support cuti-cuti Malaysia and make a weekend makan-makan jalan-jalan in Ipoh. However, a glutton like me in a town renown for good and cheap food, makan-makan obviously took precedence over jalan-jalan :D

For those who don’t want to drive, this link has a list of coaches that will take you there.
http://www.journeymalaysia.com/ptaipoh.htm

If you travel by car, take the North-South Expressway (PLUS) and exit Ipoh. Once past the toll, follow “Ipoh” signs. Follow the sign “Pusat Bandaraya” and Ipoh town centre should be about 10mins away.

A map of the town centre (like this one provided by our hotel) would be very helpful.

DAY 1

First stop
Nam Heong coffee shop, Jln Bandar Timah (its at the end of the road where a non-stop stream of cars go)
Apparently this old coffee shop is the original Ipoh white coffee that the now giant franchise in Klang Valley -- Old Town kopitiam took its name from.

Kopi ais RM1.50
- Loved it, thicker than KL white kopi and not too sweet.

Penang Fried Kuey Teow RM3.50
- Yummy and had a few sizeable prawns although why we’re eating Penang Fried Kuey Teow in Ipoh is besides me but heck look at that, how can we resist?

Hakka mee + Yong tau foo (13pcs!) RM7.80
- I estimate 50sen per pc and RM1.30 for the noodles? Awesome man!
- Hakka mee was adequately bouncy but not very tasty
- Of the yong tau foo my favourite were fish balls, yu piao (fish also), white tofu and the green chilli. These were made of the saito fish that are tasty and bouncy!
- We also had siu mai as the aunty recommended her home made siu mai – didn’t particularly like it
- Bittergourd: tasted like this was sourced from somewhere else, not made with the same fish.

The plan was to eat in two hour intervals so we’ll be able to complete all the eating the itinerary recommended but alas, it was hot and humid and we were way too full so plan was diverted to a long afternoon nap hahhaaa…

Anyhoo, in our search for hotels – we wanted one that was not too far from the centre where all the eateries are and of course not too old and dodgy (many of the hotels in town are old and a bit stinky) – we discovered Ipoh City Hotel.

Located at 18, Jalan Dass, Ipoh, the hotel is not centre and a bit of a walking distance to many of the eateries but you can walk to The Store/ Ocean and on Sunday mornings there is a pasar pagi just around the corner from it.

At only RM93.45 a night (incl. 5% govt tax), the hotel room was a very decent size, clean, with hot water, non-cable TV and a mini bar (only mineral water inside so you can buy your own junk and store).
